Learning to brief the machine: why I pay for Jonathan Mast's AI training.
I have watched AI go from a party trick to a coworker. The whole difference was learning to brief it like one.

Jonathan is Shannon's own AI teacher. The recommendation would read the same without the commission. Every tool and the full disclosure: the tools page.
The first year I used AI for real work, I was bad at it and did not know I was bad at it. I would ask a question, get a generic answer, and decide the tool was overhyped that day or overhated the next. What I was actually doing was walking up to a sharp new hire, giving them no context and no idea what we were trying to do, and then judging them for guessing.
What it is
Jonathan Mast is the person who taught me the difference. I treat him as my AI mentor. His company is White Beard Strategies. Everything he teaches comes back to one skill that is easy to underrate: loading a machine with enough of your own context that it stops guessing and starts being useful.
Most AI courses out there teach you to crank out marketing copy. That is not the skill impact people need. The skill we need is briefing - getting the AI to understand the work before you ask it to do the work.
The payoff in plain terms: once you can brief a machine well, it reaches a usable answer in a couple of passes instead of ten or twenty. Fewer passes is less of your time - and less compute burned in a data center that is often sitting on someone's watershed.
Three ways in
You do not have to start at the top. Pick the rung that fits your week and your wallet. Prices are from White Beard's own pages, as of Oct 2026. They change, so check their page before you buy.
Rung 1 · the whole library
AI Insiders - Jonathan's membership
$247 a month, or $2,470 a year · as of Oct 2026 · enrollment is by waitlist right now
Every new Challenge and Express Training released while you are a member, replays included, plus monthly coaching calls and his members' community.
For: people who will use AI every week for their work and want one place that keeps up with it. Not for: anyone testing the water. Start lower and see if his teaching lands for you first.
$97 when it runs live, $147 as a replay · as of Oct 2026
Three two-hour sessions, each an hour of teaching and an hour of live Q&A, on one topic. There is a long list of them, including one built specifically for ADHD heads. The one I link is NotebookLM Leverage, the replay of his NotebookLM challenge.
What I got: this rung is where I started. I took Jonathan's first NotebookLM cohort, live, for $97, and I have practiced with what he taught ever since. It is the course where I learned that AI can now drive the bus. The free NotebookLM walkthrough stands on that teaching.
For: someone who wants one skill properly, with someone to ask. Not for: anyone who will not set aside the three sessions or watch the replay.
$10 when it runs live, $20 as a replay · as of Oct 2026
An hour of teaching and an hour of Q&A on a single thing. The cheapest honest way to find out whether his way of teaching works for your brain. The one I link is the NotebookLM replay, the one the old walkthrough pointed to.
For: anyone curious, short on time, or short on money this month. Not for: anyone who wants a full course. That is rung 2.
You can cobble this together from free videos. I did, for a while, badly. What you pay a good teacher for is the ordered path instead of the random walk, and someone who already made the mistakes so you do not have to make all of them. For people without much bandwidth - most of the impact sector - the ordered path is the whole value. Time is the scarce thing, not information.
Who it is not for, at any rung
If you are already fluent at loading context and getting sharp output, you do not need a course to tell you what you already do. And if what you want is push-button "make me money" prompts, that is the other end of the AI-course world. This is skill-building, which is slower and worth more.
One honest note on fit: Jonathan's style centers on prompts; mine centers on systems. Both are real. They point at different outcomes. Take the part that serves your work.
